Mission

Court Appointed Special Advocates of New York City (CASA-NYC) is a volunteer-based organization whose mission is to ensure that young people involved in the NYC child welfare system have their needs met and rights protected, and that children in foster care are moved quickly into safe, stable, nurturing and permanent homes – with their families of origin whenever possible. CASA-NYC is one of the oldest and largest of nearly 1,000 CASA programs in the United States, and is a member in good standing of the National CASA Association.

Board Composition and Terms

Associate Board members make an initial contribution of $250 to CASA-NYC, and serve a one-year term. Members demonstrating high engagement and strong performance are invited to serve subsequent terms. Starting in 2022 the Associate Board meets quarterly, with sub-committees and those helping to plan the main Associate Board event meeting once a month or on a more frequent basis as outlined by the respective chair.

Board Member Responsibilities

  • Understand, advance, and promote the mission and programming of CASA-NYC

  • Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in Associate Board and committee meetings; members who miss more than two meetings may lose membership status (contact the Associate Board Chair in advance if personal or professional events impact your ability to keep your commitment)

  • Make CASA-NYC a top priority for your charitable giving

  • Recruit new members who can contribute to the organization through leadership, finances, or with other resources (including Corporate Sponsorship)
