CASA-NYC is a volunteer-based not-for-profit organization providing advocacy for children and youth in New York City foster care. We are seeking a part-time Educational Advocate, who will be responsible for training volunteer advocates and providing expert consultation to volunteer advocates and staff on education related issues.
CASA-NYC seeks a seasoned professional with a minimum of three to five years of post-graduate professional experience in the NYC educational system and a demonstrated interest in child welfare to fulfill the following responsibilities:
- Provide consultation to staff and volunteers on cases involving advocacy for Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs); special education services, high school enrollment and transfers; rights and services for English Language Learners; and other education related issues as needed.
- Create and maintain partnerships with agencies in NYC that provide educational services and or advocacy to foster children.
- Accompany volunteer advocates or staff to meetings at foster care agencies, ACS or schools when educational expertise is needed.
- Develop and facilitate bi-annual in-service trainings for volunteer advocates and staff on topics related to educational advocacy.
- Facilitate the Educational Advocacy section of the volunteer pre-services trainings four times annually.
- MSEd, JD or other relevant advanced degree.
- Three to five years of experience as a professional educator, administrator or educational advocacy attorney with significant experience in the New York City public school system.
- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of the NYC child welfare system.
- Supervision experience preferred.
- Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
- Professional maturity and ability to foster positive relationships with a diverse array of individuals and professionals.
- Ability to work both independently, with strong initiative, as well as collaboratively with a small team.
- Bilingual candidates preferred
