“CASA is a wonderful example of how ordinary citizens can contribute to the well-being of their communities by brightening the future, one child at a time.”

—The Honorable
Judith S. Kaye,
Chief Judge,
State of New York

What it Takes to Become a CASA Volunteer

When you take on a CASA case, you take on a child’s future. Becoming a CASA volunteer requires a significant but rewarding commitment. Volunteers typically spend about five hours per week working on their cases, and the minimum commitment required of each volunteer is one year.

Our volunteers come from all backgrounds. They include men and women with a variety of professional and educational experience. Many work full-time, while others are students or retired people. No legal or social service experience is required, but individuals must be at least 21 years of age.

There are Three Simple Steps to Becoming a CASA Volunteer:

1. Application

Fill out and submit a CASA volunteer online application, or email us at volunteer@casa-nyc.org for more information.

2. Interview & Information Session

All potential volunteers attend a group interview and information session conducted by a CASA staff member. They must also be cleared through a criminal background investigation, as well as the New York State Central Registry for Child Abuse.

3. Training

All volunteers must complete a 30-hour training course. Once this training is complete, CASA volunteers can take on their first case!
