Court Appointed Special Advocates - For Children in Foster Care

Statistics

Every $750 allows us to help another foster child.

Keeping children in foster care costs $15,000 per year, per child.

Today, more than 17,000 children are in the New York City child protection system. Family Court judges decide which to assign to CASA. Many of these are the most difficult cases, or cases that have been in the system too long.

During 2006, CASA advocates handled cases from all five boroughs with an estimated breakdown as follows:

Bronx
26%
Brooklyn
25%
Manhattan
25%
Queens
23%
Staten Island
1%

The children we serve range from newborns to 21-year-olds. Their ethnic breakdown is approximately 51% Black (non-Hispanic), 26% Hispanic origin, 4% White (non-Hispanic), and 19% Asian/other/unknown.

An overwhelming majority of the children in CASA's caseload comes from families living below the poverty level.
