Court Appointed Special Advocates - For Children in Foster Care

CASE FOUR

CASA helps Tracy get new legs…and more

Thanks to her CASA advocate, Tracy has a new pair of legs. Now 13, Tracy was born with no legs and only four fingers. When she was younger, Tracy had prosthetics, but she soon outgrew them. Her parents were unable to provide for her and she entered foster care where no efforts were made to fit Tracy with new prostheses.

So, Tracy languished as a foster child without legs for a number of years, until a family court judge assigned her case to CASA in January 2004. As a result of the diligent efforts of the CASA advocate, Tracy had her new legs by mid-May.

But the CASA volunteer’s work goes far beyond the legs. She’s also working to get Tracy enrolled in school and assuring that Tracy is receiving the other physical, dental and mental health services she needs.

Sadly, CASA’s work on behalf of Tracy is not an isolated case. It is one of hundreds—some more severe, some less—that CASA volunteers devote their time and efforts to every day of the year.
