CASA accepts cases from all five New York City boroughs. The process begins when a Family Court judge assigns a case to a CASA Advocate. Once an Advocate receives their case, he or she is responsible for monitoring the proceedings and insuring the implementation of social and rehabilitative services meant to move children quickly and safely out of the foster care system and into permanent homes.
The responsibilities of CASA Advocates can include the following:
- Facilitating communication between the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) and the voluntary foster-care providers.
- Coordinating services and placements for children with multiple service needs and/or large sibling groups.
- Tracking the paperwork and requirements of moving a child in care to another state.
- Gathering objective information from all parties involved in a case—the child, family members, foster parents, service providers and other knowledgeable individuals. The advocate then submits a report to the judge to help the judge select the best option for the child’s permanent safety.
- Ensuring that all mandated services are accessible and provided and the child’s safety is maintained.
- Ensuring that the case reaches a swift and satisfactory conclusion.
